What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Open-cell foam is softer, less dense, and typically used for interior applications like wall cavities and attic floors. It has a lower R-value per inch (around R-3.7) but is excellent for air sealing and is more affordable. Closed-cell foam is denser, has a higher R-value (around R-6.5 per inch), acts as a vapor barrier, and is ideal for crawl spaces, rim joists, and roof decks where moisture resistance is important.
Do I need to leave the house during spray foam installation?
Yes. Spray foam off-gasses during and immediately after installation. We ask residents (including pets) to vacate for a minimum of 24 hours while the foam cures. We will confirm the specific window based on the area being sprayed, the product used, and ventilation.
Is spray foam worth the higher cost compared to fiberglass batts?
It depends on the application. For attic roof decks, rim joists, and crawl spaces where you want a combined air seal and vapor barrier, spray foam often outperforms batts by enough to justify the cost. For standard wall cavities in new construction, batts or dense-pack cellulose are often a better value. We will give you a straightforward comparison for your specific project.

How much can I save on energy bills by upgrading insulation?
Results vary by home, but the EPA estimates that proper sealing and insulation can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs. Albuquerque homes with older or insufficient insulation often see savings at the higher end of that range given the extreme summer heat and cold winters at 5,300 feet elevation. Should I combine insulation with air sealing?
Yes, always. Insulation slows heat transfer, but if air can still move freely through gaps around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and attic bypasses, you are losing a significant portion of your efficiency gains. Air sealing paired with insulation is the most cost-effective energy upgrade most homes can make.
Are there tax credits or rebates for insulation in New Mexico?
The federal Inflation Reduction Act allows a 30% tax credit (up to $1,200 per year) for insulation and air sealing improvements in existing homes. Because Albuquerque has both hot summers and cold winters (Climate Zone 4B), the attic is the highest-priority upgrade. R-49 or higher in the attic addresses both heating and cooling loads.
